Respecting Wisdom, Restoring Dignity: How Friends of Mentors Brings Affordable Care and Companionship to India’s Elders
India Is Growing Older—Fast
India’s population over 60 is projected to double by 2050. While life expectancy rises, many seniors face loneliness, high medical costs, and delayed services. Traditional joint families are giving way to nuclear households, leaving elders isolated and vulnerable.
The Philosophy: Elders as Mentors
We call our elders “mentors” because they are custodians of life lessons and community memory. But wisdom deserves more than reverence—it deserves active support. Friends of Mentors matches compassionate “friends” with these mentors to create a network of care, respect, and practical help.
How the Program Works
1. Affordable Healthcare Access: We partner with diagnostic centres and pharmacies to negotiate lower prices for tests, medicines, and home visits.
2. Rapid-Response Services: A 24/7 helpline ensures emergencies receive immediate attention—often faster than family members can arrive.
3. Companionship Visits: Volunteers schedule regular check-ins, from sharing tea to helping with grocery runs or digital banking.
More Than Care—Community
The friendships formed often span generations. University students learn resilience and empathy; seniors rediscover purpose as storytellers and advisors. One pair—78-year-old retired teacher Mr. Verma and his “friend” Ananya, a 22-year-old MBA student—now co-host free English classes for neighbourhood children.
The Ripple Effect
• Reduced hospital admissions through preventive care.
• Lower healthcare costs for families.
• Stronger neighbourhood ties and intergenerational understanding.
